Ed Sheeran Reveals Secret Battle With Substance Abuse

“It all starts off as a party and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call.”

“I just enjoy going out and having fun, being 25. And I think that’s a normal thing.”

According to PeopleEd Sheeran will publicly reveal his secret battle with substance abuse on Saturday’s episode of The Jonathan Ross Show.

The “Shape of You” singer took an entire year off from music so he could distance himself from an environment that triggered the abuse.

“I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to [fame], and I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on tour. And all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse,” Sheeran explained.

“I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that’s why I took a year off and buggered off.”

During his hiatus, the Grammy-winning artist got rid of his cell phone and actively stayed away from social media.

“I focused on work, and I can’t work under the influence. I can’t write songs under the influence,” Sheeran stated.

“I can’t perform under the influence. So, the more I worked, the less [that happened],” Sheeran said on the show.

“I’ve worked my whole life to get to where I am, and you can’t lose that over something that you do in your spare time.”

Still, it took Sheeran time to realize what was happening and that he had a serious problem.

“It just started gradually happening, and then some people took me to one side and were like, ‘Calm yourself down.’ It’s all fun to begin with. It all starts off as a party, and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call and [I took] a year off,” he added.

Although, Sheeran never specified which substances he abused, he did open up about his heavy drinking in a March 2017 Rolling Stone profile.

In fact, the story revealed how Sheeran’s frequent songwriting collaborator, Johnny McDaid, was concerned about his health.

In the Rolling Stone article, Sheeran also addressed his alcohol consumption candidly. “Often, I’m like, ‘Is it bad that I drink almost every single day?’…But I don’t wake up and drink. I don’t depend on drink. I can go without it completely,” he said.

“I just enjoy going out and having fun, being 25. And I think that’s a normal thing.”

Sheeran credited his girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn, for helping him through the difficult period.

The two live together, and spending more time with her has had a significant impact on Sheeran’s well-being.

“We live together now, and I think that was a real help grounding me,” he revealed.

“I was a 25-year-old in the music industry on tour, so I just needed someone to balance me out.”
