Australian pop singer Samantha Jade has revealed she ditched her American record label because of Britney Spears.
Speaking to the Nova Podcast How To… Life, Samantha said: “I was such a huge Britney fan. I love her. But we were signed to the same label, so at the time she was kinda my competitor.”
She continued: “We had the same A&R, the same marketing. They basically were like we are either going to put all of our eggs in Britney’s basket, and you are going to have to be shelved for a year or we are going to not be able to work on your project. And my management were like let’s leave and get another deal. There was no other deal.”
Speaking on the moment she left her music career behind in Los Angeles, she said: “It was this moment of the last meeting I had.”
“You build yourself up to go to a meeting. I walked in and this guy is building me up and saying ‘You’re great and I’ve always been a fan of you’. But at the end he said ‘you don’t have a star tone, I don’t remember your voice, it’s not memorable’. That was it for me, I was like ‘I’m done, I’m going home.”
