Daryl Hall hails You Make My Dreams' 'aggressive positivity'

Daryl Hall believes ‘You Make My Dreams’ is popular because of its “aggressive positivity”.

The 1981 single by Hall & Oates has remained popular in the four decades since its release and passed the landmark of one billion streams last year but Daryl – who stars alongside John Oates in the pop rock duo – is puzzled by its continued success.

Asked why the song is still being streamed, Daryl said: “I’m not really sure, that’s the truth.”

However, John suggested that the song is simply a “great groove” and a “direct statement”.

He told the Guardian newspaper: “It’s just a f*****’ great groove and a simple, direct statement. I could have cut all the c*** and just said that.”

Daryl has presented the YouTube series ‘Live from Daryl’s House’ since 2007 and explained that he came up with the idea amid the 2003 SARS epidemic, as he was worried about what could happen if the mu industry was halted by a global crisis.

The 74-year-old muian said: “I thought: what if this happens on a larger scale? Maybe I should figure out a way, if there ever comes a point where I can’t travel, that I can bring the world to me.”

Daryl suggested that the eclectic range of guests on the show reflects how the ‘Maneater’ hitmakers were difficult to define mually.

He said: “Not easy to peg, not easy to categorise.

“I blame myself, really, more than anybody, more than John. ‘Live from Daryl’s House’ is a way I can explain that mual language, where I can have all these completely different mual styles and swim in any of those waters. And that sort of explained me.

“Before that, I absolutely think people were confused.”
